Kijiji Yeetu is a smart ecosystem that activates village resources, knowledge, and aspirations for development and devolved governance. In Kenya, the non-profit organization secures space for dialogue, community networks, and digital transformation for young people, women, and their communities. Kijiji Yeetu adopts a multi-stakeholder collaborative engagement that ensures peace, security, and stability for local communities. The organization has a vision is to build future generations of young people, women and their families through the smart villages in counties of Kenya and beyond Africa.  The mission to activate village development, education, technology innovation and economic growth across counties of Kenya, through strong community networks, digital transformation and informed dialogue.

In the process, digital village champions as part of our community security programme, will impact on the community, and engage the locals about security affecting them and the future of their villages. Our partners, Usalama Forum, United States International University-Africa, Ushahidi, Internet Society Kenya, Kenya Flying Labs, International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) Youth Forum among others. The partners, helped us develop village stories and voices on community security and safety organizing and training, education (e-mentorship, digital library), e-information portal and advisory for non-technical persons. This was influenced by the continued use of Internet and ICT solutions contributing towards policy legislation, regulation and practice for development with emphasis on Governance and Security.  

Kijiji progress:  

  • Digital Transformation: Provincial administration to digitizing village and informal settlement effort through community policing (Nyumba Kumi Initiatives) and digital village champions (as per County Government Act 2012).
  • Community Networks: Ushahidi mapping and data exploration, digital communities- Facebook and Twitter used to share COVID-19 education, knowledge and stories of change.

Conversations and Dialogue: Openideo platform that has idea accelerators that give people worldwide the design tools, connections, and support to build solutions for tough societal problems. Data Collaboratives accelerator action build responsible infrastructure for data-driven pandemic response, a few to mention.
