About

The Centre for Maritime Law and Security Africa (CEMLAWS Africa) is a non-governmental organisation established in Ghana, which seeks to improve ocean governance and maritime security in Africa.

Mission

The mission of the Centre is to promote effective national and regional responses to ocean governance and maritime security through policy analysis, expert-driven deliberations, capacity building and research. 

Focus

  • Civil Society Engagement: Creation of awareness of core national and regional maritime interests (as well as how to advance them) amongst civil society groups and organisations
  • Capacity Building: Facilitation of training and capacity building initiatives across the continuum of ocean governance and maritime interests;
  • Research: Researching the broader governance, political and economic dynamics that impact the maritime environment of Africa;
  • Collaboration: Providing a platform for collaboration and advocacy for the implementation of key global and regional initiatives on maritime governance; and
  • Threat Assessment: Identifying threats to maritime security and appropriate legal responses
